Art guide

Plan a museum or gallery visit

Choose a place, check access conditions and make a route that leaves time for the art.

Choose the right format

Museums present collections and temporary exhibitions; commercial galleries programme exhibitions around artists they represent. An art centre may operate entirely through temporary shows. Compare the current programme rather than inferring the offer from the institution’s name.

Check before booking

Use the official website. Check the building and address, closure day, accessible rooms, time slot and what your ticket includes. Free permanent collections and paid exhibitions may coexist. Do not infer free admission from the type of institution.

Adapt your route

Choose a few rooms around a theme, medium or period. Use the floor plan to check distances, lifts and rest areas. With children, try finding details or comparing two works. Contact the venue before travelling if you have access requirements.

Look and keep a record

Look first, then read the label. Record the artist, title and accession number. Check photography and bag policies; permission to take pictures does not permit touching. Find the official catalogue record afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book a free visit?

It depends on the venue and date. Free admission may still require a time slot; confirm this through the official booking system.

How many places should I visit in one day?

Choose a main visit and an optional second stop. Check actual travel between buildings; our city pages group institutions but do not provide timed itineraries.

Is a work in the collection always on display?

No. Loans, rotations, storage and conservation change displays. Check the catalogue’s on-view status or ask the museum.
